Customer Appreciation Special - Join us for a special FREE day at the Lab 2-8pm on Friday Nov. 29th, 2019 Schedule:
Metal Arts Society of Southern California At Anneville Jewelry Lab February 8 & 9th, 2020 - 2 day intensive Learn the traditional Japanese method of patterning mokume-gane; using a chisel to carve into the surface of blank mokume-gane to create rivers of pattern. After hammering the sheet back to flat, the unique patterns are locked into the metal forever. Participants will create patterned sheets the first day, then have the option of creating a finished pendant the second day, and/or creating their own mokume gane chisel. Hear ye, hear ye minstrels, maidens and mercenaries, conserve your gold coin for our Merry Maker's Market. It's hard to believe, but we opened the doors of our jewelry metals co-work space and open lab a whole year ago! In that time we've cultivated a family of 120 active students and 5 instructors - all of whom bring their own wonderful ideas, questions and expertise to every class. Over the past 10 months we've hosted 25 classes, 3 visiting artist workshops and logged dozens of open lab hours. Our mailing list has steadily grown to over 600 contacts and we have tons of interesting photos, videos and tips & tricks to post our Instagram and Facebook feeds. There's so much going on it's hard to find the time to parse through it all! To celebrate we're throwing a joyful party in the style of Dia de Los Muertos with special music and refreshments, free door prizes for the first 30 visitors, and a free raffle with some really great prizes. The evening's highlight will be a special awards ceremony at 7pm. Really we're filled with gratitude for all of the amazing support we've gotten from our students, colleagues, friends and family. First Friday is Liberty Station's monthly open studio event so in addition to visiting us you can experience a projection-mapped labyrinth right outside our building, explore the Liberty Public Market, visit nearby shops and studios and catch live entertainment - all with easy parking. It's one of San Diego's premiere, free, family-friendly arts events. Bring a friend or make one here, either way we hope you'll help us celebrate our first year! Get details and directions. Roughly 40 brave souls accepted the challenge to open EVERY drawer of the Toolbox of Terror at our October First Friday open studio. Not everyone who tried waw able to finish, but those who showed fortitude were richly rewarded. As each victim, er I mean guest, entered they were greeted by Ame or impromptu volunteer Jean and asked if they were ready to ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE. If they answered yes we led them over to the TOOLBOX OF TERROR and wished them good luck. We then retired across the room to listen to their screams (and a good amount of laughter at our cheesy display). Successful adventurers were rewarded with the choice of asking our extremely vintage Magic 8 Ball a question or consulting our Crystal Ball. Every visitor left with a goody from our treat basket - either candy or stickers. Continue on for photos and ... if you're brave enough ... view the TOOLBOX OF TERROR ITSELF! We've pried open the crypt and invited a host of horrors out to play for First Friday on October 4th! Stop by between 5-9 pm for all sorts of spooky delights including a reanimated BOGO special. Don't miss the famous interactive Toolbox of Terror ... Bwah Ha Ha! Saturday was a gorgeous day at Liberty Station and thanks to the hard work of the folks at the San Diego Blood Bank we saw 18 donors and collected 18 pints of blood, saving 54 lives in our community. Eight of the participants were first time donors, which is fantastic! I gave blood at noon and was delighted to discover that they were showing Godzilla King of the Monsters! I literally didn't even notice when the nurse started the blood draw because I was watching Mothra. So much fun! AND, everyone who donated got a voucher for a free pint of Baskin Robbins ice cream. The best thing of all is that I had set a modest goal of collecting 30 donations in our first year of hosting the Bloodmobile. I am very happy to announce that we blew past that goal with 41 donations! Next Blood Drive is tentatively scheduled for March 2020. Hundreds of visitors attended the live concert, open artist studios, gallery viewings, food and wine at September's First Friday. This was an "Amplified" month, which brought another opportunity for our students to offer their pieces at the Local Bazaar outdoor sale. Beth Peckham, Thida Key and Yoko Rover really pulled out the stops to finish some great work and create beautiful table displays. Meanwhile up in the Lab, Jeff Fulkerson offered some of his beautiful jewelry along with colorful cabochons and Anne demo'd mokume gane raising. We had some great visitors too including past ring clients and current students Cecilia & Gina, Pat & Marie and Yvonne - who arrived with little Zinnia, Sophia and Christof too! Thank you SO MUCH to our dedicated students who staffed the table representing the Lab, to Jeff for being on hand to explain his upcoming class offerings and to everyone who stopped by the say hello. Stop by Anneville Jewelry Lab on the First Friday in August (8/2/19) to browse beautiful cabochons and explore the world of semi-precious gemstones with master lapidarist Michael Hendrix of Minarex. Michael cuts each stone by hand in his San Diego County studio. Each creation is unique, like a miniature painting full of nature's colors and textures, ready to be part of a unique jewelry creation. Not a jeweler? No worries - our jewelers will be on hand to discuss a custom commission to set your newfound gem. Or even better, you can take one of our upcoming classes and learn to set it yourself! Then head over to Anneville Studio to meet steel and gold artist Bette Barnett! She'll will have an array of work on display and be discussing her fascinating Keum Boo technique and more. First Friday is a fun, family-friendly event that happens every month. Come explore the fabulous new Liberty Public Market, stroll through shops and visit working artist studios to see what's new - all for FREE. Anneville is just one of over 80 artist studios, galleries, museums and other art destinations open for this monthly event. With a dozen fabulous restaurants within walking distance, it makes a great evening out. And, we've got free parking! Hope to see you soon. More info about Friday Night Liberty can be found at NTC at Liberty Station. Get directions. At the San Diego County Fair this year, talented Anneville students and teachers took home multiple 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons in several categories … including acrylic painting! The work period up to the fair was full of focused energy, the pre-fair sunset cocktails event was wonderful (thanks Cindy!) and the Exhibitor Night Party was great fun. Every time we came around a corner … BOOM another ribbon! And we had a great time listening to fairgoers view the work too “Oh, this one is so creative.” and “Wow, look at the detail on that!”. Two of our students were even contacted to sell their entries. Maker's Rummage Sale & Raffle pairs with Hollow Form Demos to wow visitors at July's First Friday7/8/2019
Our July #FirstFriday #ShopAndSwap#OpenStudio was a big success! We had about 75 visitors come through to enjoy browsing our Maker's Rummage Sale (which extended out into the hallway), watching @alexandrahartmfa doing her fascinating #anticlasticraising demos and @paparon1943 demonstrating his #FrenchMarquetry work. We also had Abby selling her beautiful #cabochons, Susan with cabochons and lots more, and generous donations of goodies by Karen F. and Karen R. So far weâve raised almost $300 for #JewishFamilyServices in support of the Downtown Migrant Shelter - and weâre not done yet! (More on that in the next post). Super-duper big thanks to the wonderful Joanne & Herb Hein @joannehein and @growinggreeninteractions for their fabulous set up, cashiering and MC Services! And now for the winners of our JFS fundraiser raffle ....
Join us for our monthly open studio event to liberate your toolbox, score some great deals and help our community! We'll be collecting donations with every sale for the Jewish Family Services Downtown Migrant Shelter.

We had a wonderful turnout for our first Anneville Jewelry Lab Student Sale on Friday, June 7th. We were blessed with good weather and (thanks to Anne's swift action) a great location on a patio right near the Jewelry Lab. Our student artists created appealing displays of their own items and then worked together to quickly create an inviting, u-shaped exhibit that well represented the Lab as an organization. We were a bit concerned by the late-breaking detail that we'd have no electricity (gah!) but we gathered up our camping lights and bravely continued. Meanwhile, up in the Lab, Anne did some mokume gane patterning demos and we had a great time seeing old friends and meeting new ones. We were thrilled by a visit from our new instructor, Alexandra Hart as well as our dear friend Helen Shirk (each accompanied by their handsome beaus). It was great to see students from the lab and different classes coming together to meet for the first time. I'm so impressed by how much work and thoughtfulness everyone put in to making this event a success. Be sure to view our fun photos. June 7th, 2019 • 5-9pm Pop Up Market • Live Concerts • Craft Beer Garden Our students are busily working on their Spring jewelry collections and we're super excited to be hosting our first Jewelry Lab Student Sale! Come meet our student makers and browse their beautiful, handmade jewelry & gifts in the outdoor bazaar. We'll also be open in the Lab where Anne Wolf will be doing live Japanese metalworking demos and you can even try your hand - just follow the sound of hammering upstairs in Barracks 15. Totally free and fun for the whole family. Live demos at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. Get directions. Sunday, May 12, 2019 10:30am-4pm Celebrate all the moms by giving the gift of life! Ame here, Lab Coordinator. As many of you know, my mom passed into the great beyond a few years ago so I can't take her out for a swanky Mother's Day brunch. But instead of having a sad day missing her, I'm donating blood in her honor. Did you know that one donation can save several lives? The process is almost completely painless (2 tiny micro-second needle sticks), the people are super friendly, it's really fast and they always have great snacks. Come donate with us on Sunday and you'll get the satisfaction of knowing that you're fulfilling a life-saving, urgent need in our community. Walk-ins are welcome or, for optimum speediness, you can reserve a spot by calling 1-800-469-7322 or you can make an online appointment. Over 50 people followed the sound of ringing hammers to see our demos at our monthly open studio event last Friday. Anneville Jewelry Lab member Janet Herman taught her sold-out class how to use the20-ton hydraulic press and they created a collection of bees, flowers and other items that will be used in jewelry projects. Meanwhile Anne showed visitors the Japanese metalworking technique of Uchidashi and several people gave it a go themselves with our demo pitch bowl. In our raffle we gave away one of our new Anneville fridge magnets, a gift certificate for goodies from our General Store and TWO necklaces featuring freshly-pressed bees. Photos coming soon!
We had one of our biggest open studio nights ever with over 80 attendees on Friday, April 5th. Ford Hallam and Anne were both on hand demonstrating uchidashi, visiting with guests and even doing some ingot melting with Lincoln Hatfield and Douglas Pryor - two of our uchidashi students. Meanwhile videographer and goldsmith Bella Day wowed us all with "Sakura Silver" and the remaining students and visitors had a great time relaxing after our busy week. We even saw old friends and made some new ones. View photos. Over 35 attendees stopped by our March 1st Friday Night Liberty to watch Anne and Julie demonstrate their ingeniously unique metalworking techniques. Julie started things off with her unconventional torch-fired enamels. She wowed visitors with the transformation of white powdered glass into colorful, organic patterns. Meanwhile Anne showed off her fascinating hido quench trick for transforming normal metal into brilliant red gradients. Read on for photos! Meet Julie Monroe To celebrate our newest instructor, we're hosting an evening of music, live demos, lab tours and a raffle. Julie is a silversmith, lapidary artist, jewelry designer, and talented teacher. Her current classes include Fire & Ice Pendant, Torch Fired Enamel Pendant or Earrings and Silver & Turquoise Jasper Chain ... and they're filling fast! View her class descriptions on our website or stop by and see her amazing enamel work come to life in person this Friday. Julie will be doing live demos on the half hour. We were blessed with fantastic weather for our visit from the San Diego Bloodmobile today! We had set our goals pretty high and didn't quite hit them, but that gives us room to improve. All in all, 9 civic-minded donors participated and we collected 8 pints of blood saving 24 lives. We also valiantly ate a lot of leftover donuts (we somehow managed to choke them down). A big thank you to everyone who donated or shared the news about the Anneville and Friends Blood Drive. We feel so fortunate to be a part of the Liberty Station community and it was great fun to walk around handing out flyers and meeting people. Shout out to our friends at the Mingei Cafe and the Hot Spot! I also want to thank the fabulous Leslie Eagan at the San Diego Blood Bank. From the custom flyers to parking assistance, she was fantastic to work with. We had a lovely time on Friday night visiting with old friends Guadalupe and her handsome beau who were out celebrating their anniversary. All-in-all about 20 people wandered through checking out The Lab and watching Anne's live goldsmithing demos - she even finished a client ring order! Join us next month when we'll be featuring our new instructor, Julie Monroe. Hopefully we can talk her into doing some live demos of her amazing torch-fired enamel techniques ... stay tuned! Monday, February 11th, 11am-4:30pm With the recent winter storms shutting down transportation across the country, blood donation centers have asked for help from the San Diego Blood Bank. If you are a donor or know of someone who can donate, please help us meet our goal of 30 donations on 2/11/19. This is a great opportunity to help people across the country in a non-financial way. Making an appointment in advance will help us plan for donuts. Make your appointment | Get directions. We were thrilled to welcome over 50 guests to celebrate the Anneville Jewelry Lab Grand Opening last night at January's Friday Night Liberty. We saw old friends, made new ones, Anne did jewelry demos and we had a festive, New Year's themed raffle for one of Anne's handmade mokume gane brooches. The lucky winner was Deanna! Thank you so much to our great volunteer helpers Kathy and Diana and to all of you who came out on a cold night to celebrate the achievement of a vision that Anne first had several years ago - that of launching her own jewelry teaching space. Here's to the year ahead, may it be filled with the happy ringing of hammers!
Friday January 4th, 5-9pm We're thrilled to announce that Anneville Jewelry Lab is now officially open!
