Learn to do the twist! Twist patterning is the basis for most of the precious-metal mokume rings made in the US – mine included. In this class you’ll learn exactly how I create such detailed organic patterns in my rings.
This class has been thoroughly updated for 2023, with new footage and new projects. On the first day I'll show two popular twist patterns - the classic woodgrain and the star. Each pattern will be shown step-by-step, with visuals, videos, and my live narration. You'll have lots of time to try the techniques using the copper/brass mokume from your kit, with me right there to answer your questions as they come up. On the second day I'll show how to turn one of your patterned pieces into a finished pendant, by backing with sterling silver and adding a simple bail.
For the more advanced/ambitious students, I'll be offering a deluxe kit with sterling silver/shibuichi mokume rod, which can be used to repeat either of the techniques.
For the best experience, this class is limited to 15 students. Prior experience with annealing, soldering, and forging is recommended.
Equipment/supplies needed: Torch, good vise-grip pliers, vise, forging or heavy planishing hammer (low-dome face), sturdy steel forging surface, files, handvise, sawframe and #3 blades, easy solder, rawhide or plastic mallet, liver of sulfur.
Optional but recommended: flexshaft, rolling mill.
Basic Kit - sold separately: 1 3” copper/brass 4.5mm square mokume rod, 1 2” copper/brass 6mm square mokume rod, .5" x 1.75" sterling silver sheet 20 gauge, silver tubing for bail, sanding discs and mandrel, sandpaper and wax. $75
Deluxe Kit - sold separately: Includes all above, plus a 2” sterling silver/shibuichi 6mm rod (my exclusive mokume, not available anywhere else), and a sample size of Baldwin’s patina. $165.
Wondering if the deluxe kit is right for you? Mokume with silver in it can be ruined if overheated. If you can confidently anneal and solder silver without overheating it, you should be fine to order the deluxe kit.
Important: Be sure to order your kit by September 20, 2023 (US) to receive it in time.
