Twisting Mokume

Live Online Workshop with Anne Wolf

September 24-25 - Saturday - Sunday 10am - 4pm PDT

Tuition $295 + $75-$195 kit fee (+tax & shipping)

Learn to do the twist! Twist patterning is the basis for most of the precious-metal mokume rings made in the US – mine included. In this class you’ll learn exactly how I create such detailed organic patterns in my rings, all while you create an intricately patterned copper/brass cuff bracelet. (You’ll also learn why we are making bracelets rather than rings.) On the second day I’ll show two more variations on the twist – the star pattern and a more advanced pattern I call ‘mizu’ or the water pattern. According to your interest and experience level you can focus on finishing the bracelet or try one or both of these other techniques. The basic kit comes with enough copper/brass mokume rod for two or possibly all three of the techniques. For the more advanced or ambitious students you can purchase the deluxe kit, with enough additional mokume to make a silver/copper/brass bracelet. For the best experience, this class is limited to 15 students. Prior experience with annealing and forging is recommended.

This online class is designed to work just like an in-person workshop. We’ll be teaching via Zoom and you’re encouraged to work on your piece and ask questions along the way:

  • We’ll begin with an interactive presentation and demos and then we’ll break for lunch.
  • During lunch, the Zoom meeting stays open so you can either take a break or continue working with your fellow students.
  • I return to the Zoom session after lunch to answer questions. Work on your own or rejoin the Zoom class to work alongside your fellow students.
  • We’ll finish each day with a group wrap up session. On the last day we’ll have our traditional raffle too!

Equipment/supplies needed: Torch for annealing, good vise-grip pliers, vise, forging or heavy planishing hammer (low-dome face), sturdy steel forging surface, files, handvise, dot stamp or chasing tool, sawframe and #1 blades, bracelet mandrel or equivalent (shaft of a large dapping punch will work), rawhide or plastic mallet, liver of sulfur.

Optional but recommended: flexshaft, rolling mill.

Optional for further steps with Mizu pattern; easy solder, sterling silver 18g sheet, .5” x 6”.

Basic Kit - sold separately: 1 4” copper/brass 5mm square mokume rod, 1 2” copper/brass 6mm square mokume rod, sanding discs and mandrel, sandpaper and wax. $75

Deluxe Kit - sold separately: Includes all above, plus a 4” sterling silver/copper/brass 5mm square mokume rod (my exclusive 3-color mokume not available anywhere else), and a sample size of Baldwin’s patina. $195.

Wondering if the deluxe kit is right for you? Silver/copper/brass mokume can be ruined if overheated. If you can confidently anneal and solder silver without overheating it, you should be fine to order the deluxe kit.

Important: Be sure to order your kit by August 24 (US) to receive it in time.
