Twist & Bur: Mokume Ring Patterning
Live Online Workshop with Anne Wolf
May 16 & 17, 2026, 10am-4pm Pacific time
Tuition $295 plus required kit fee ($95 basic, $195 deluxe)
Twist patterning is the basis for most of the precious-metal mokume rings made in the US – mine included. In this online class you’ll learn exactly how I create such detailed organic patterns in my rings. I'll show two patterns created using round edge wheel burrs (3rd and 6th from left in the photo). Even if you've never patterned mokume before, you can follow the steps to create two uniquely patterned rods. Use the copper/brass mokume included in the basic kit, or spring for the deluxe kit which includes sterling silver/shibuichi rod.
Each pattern will be shown step-by-step, with visuals, videos, and my live narration. You'll have lots of time to try the techniques with me right there to answer your questions as they come up.
On the second day, I will show how to turn one of your patterned rods into a mokume gane ring! This is the first time I will be showing this process in any class. You are welcome to try it as practice on the copper/brass, but be aware only the deluxe mokume is really suitable to wear.
This online class is designed to work just like an in-person workshop, with demos, interactive presentations, and time to practice skills. We’ll be teaching via Zoom and you’re encouraged to work and ask questions along the way. We’ll finish each day with a group wrap up session. On the last day we’ll have our traditional raffle too! For the best experience, this class is limited to 15 students. Prior experience with using a flexshaft, annealing, and forging is recommended.
Equipment/supplies needed: Torch, flexshaft, good vise-grip pliers, vise, forging or heavy planishing hammer (low-dome face), sturdy steel forging surface, files, handvise, rawhide or plastic mallet, liver of sulfur.
Basic Kit - sold separately: 2 2" copper/brass 4.5mm square mokume rods, 1 steel tire bur, sanding discs and mandrel, sandpaper and wax. $95
Deluxe Kit - sold separately: Includes all above, plus a 2” sterling silver/shibuichi 4mm rod (my exclusive mokume, not available anywhere else), and a sample size of Baldwin’s patina. $195.
Wondering if the deluxe kit is right for you? Mokume with silver in it can be ruined if overheated. If you can confidently anneal and solder silver without overheating it, you should be fine to order the deluxe kit.
Important: Be sure to order your kit by April 24, 2026 (US) to receive it in time.
