Twist & Bur: Mokume Ring Patterning - Online

May 16 & 17, 2026
Tuition:
Basic $390 ($295 reg. plus $95 required kit fee)
Deluxe $490 ($295 reg. plus $195 required kit fee)

Twist patterning is the basis for most of the precious-metal mokume rings made in the US – mine included. In this online class you’ll learn exactly how I create such detailed organic patterns in my rings. I'll show two patterns created using round edge wheel burrs (3rd and 6th from left in the photo). Even if you've never patterned mokume before, you can follow the steps to create two uniquely patterned rods. Use the copper/brass mokume included in the basic kit, or spring for the deluxe kit which includes sterling silver/shibuichi rod. Each pattern will be shown step-by-step, with visuals, videos, and my live narration. You'll have lots of time to try the techniques with me right there to answer your questions as they come up.

On the second day, I will show how to turn one of your patterned rods into a mokume gane ring! This is the first time I will be showing this process. You are welcome to try it as practice on the copper/brass, but be aware only the deluxe mokume is really suitable to wear.  For the best experience, this class is limited to 15 students. Prior experience with using a flexshaft, annealing, and forging is recommended.

Equipment/supplies needed: Torch, flexshaft, good vise-grip pliers, vise, forging or heavy planishing hammer (low-dome face), sturdy steel forging surface, files, handvise, rawhide or plastic mallet, liver of sulfur.

Fuse, Forge, & Roll - In-person

June 5,6,7 -  2026
Tuition TBD, kit fee $80 payable in class
Boulder Metalsmithing Association, Boulder CO

Mokume Gane is an ancient Japanese metalworking technique in which layers of metal are fused together using time, heat, and pressure (no solder). All aspects of the billet-making process will be covered in this class, from billet design, proper cleaning and prep, to what temperatures and soak times to use for what metals, etc. We’ll be using the precise solid-state diffusion bonding method, and hot-forging our billets. After rolling the billets down to sheet and/or rod they will be ready to pattern. This workshop is a great follow on for those who have taken any of Anne’s online mokume gane patterning classes, but it is also open to those new to mokume gane. Participants can expect to create mokume gane billets and patterned samples, to be turned into finished work in their own studio or the next class. Detailed handouts including step-by-steps and equipment sources will be provided. Experience annealing and soldering silver is recommended.Kit fee covers consumables, billet materials except optional silver, and use of torque plates. Use of silver optional, bring a 3" x 3" of 20 gauge fine or sterling silver. Students also have the option to purchase a stainless steel torque plate set for $160. Stamped Mokume Gane Pendant - Online

July 11-12, 2026
Tuition $295 plus required kit fee ($85 basic, $175 deluxe)

Learn to stamp-pattern mokume gane, then create a stunning mokume gane pendant in your home studio. This online, interactive class is designed for beginning-intermediate jewelry/metals artists with some experience soldering and sawing. Stamping is the easiest patterning method; the kit includes mokume gane blanks so you can focus on the patterning.

The first day you’ll create your own uniquely patterned mokume sheet, and the second day you’ll fabricate it into a domed pendant with silver edge and bail. Soldering and finishing a mokume gane piece can be tricky. This class will provide essential tips and tricks for clear, clean patterned pieces with good contrast and no pits, fuzziness or delaminations. You may even learn a few soldering tips applicable to your non-mokume work! Lastly we’ll patinate and protect the finished piece.

This online class is designed to work just like an in-person workshop, with demos, interactive presentations, and time to practice skills. We’ll be teaching via Zoom and you’re encouraged to work and ask questions along the way. We’ll finish each day with a group wrap up session. On the last day we’ll have our traditional raffle too! For the best experience, this class is limited to 15 students.

Mokume Essentials: From Fusing to Patinas in just 5 days - In Person

August 3-7, 2026
Tuition $890, kit fee $180 payable to instructor in class
Danaca Design, Seattle Washington

I love teaching here; it is my favorite studio and the one I return to most often, partly because of the great coffee and restaurants within a 2-minute walk, and actual usable public transportation. But more importantly it's friendly and well-equipped, and there is an 8 student maximum so there is plenty of space to spread out and time to ask me questions.
Mokume Gane is an ancient Japanese metalworking technique in which layers of non-ferrous metals are fused together using time, heat, and pressure (no solder). All aspects of this complex technique will be covered in just 5 days, from fusing to patterning to patinas. On day 1 we’ll stack and fuse billets using the precise solid-state diffusion bonding method. Day 2 we’ll forge and roll the billets down to workable material. Days 3 and 4 will be an enticing smorgasbord of patterning techniques, including the cherry-blossom pattern. Finally on day 5 we'll cover mokume-specific soldering and finishing techniques, and we’ll end with some knock-your-socks off patina recipes. You’ll leave with detailed handouts to practice and repeat the processes, an equipment list to fuse your own mokume at home, fused mokume, patterned mokume, and maybe even a finished jewelry piece or two. For notices about upcoming classes:

"I really enjoyed the class and doing the sample projects we did. For me it was just the right amount of activity and time to do them. Doing the sample projects was much less stressful than doing a finished jewelry project. And I would highly recommend this class to anyone who might like to learn the patina techniques taught in the class. And the teacher is excellent and provides enough instruction to guide students to learn the techniques." ~ Karen S., Chula Vista, CA

"The Patina class was great fun and gave me new and wonderful patina techniques. I plan to put patina on as many item as I can find. Well worth the time and class fee. Highly recommend this class."
~ Karen R., San Diego, CA

“Mokume gane patterning with chisels was one of the most enjoyable courses I've ever done." ~ Helen M., Sydney, Australia

"Kit and demos were great, slides and handouts were very useful, learning to love Mokume even more if that's possible!! I will continue to tell my east coast metalsmiths about these classes with Anne."
~ Valerie Conerway, Hampton, GA
