"I really enjoyed the class and doing the sample projects we did. For me it was just the right amount of activity and time to do them. Doing the sample projects was much less stressful than doing a finished jewelry project. And I would highly recommend this class to anyone who might like to learn the patina techniques taught in the class. And the teacher is excellent and provides enough instruction to guide students to learn the techniques." ~ Karen S., Chula Vista, CA

"The Patina class was great fun and gave me new and wonderful patina techniques. I plan to put patina on as many item as I can find. Well worth the time and class fee. Highly recommend this class."
~ Karen R., San Diego, CA

“Mokume gane patterning with chisels was one of the most enjoyable courses I've ever done." ~ Helen M., Sydney, Australia

Mokume Gane Chisel Patterning - live 2-day Online
May 2025

Learn the most traditional Japanese method of patterning mokume-gane. Chisel into the surface of blank mokume-gane to create rivers of pattern that follow your chisel marks. After hammering the sheet back to flat, your unique chisel patterns are locked into the metal forever. Traditionally pitch is used to secure the metal while chiseling, but in this class Anne will also show a lower-cost easy alternative. On the first day you’ll pattern copper/brass mokume sheet, then the second day you’ll refine your skills and learn to chisel-pattern silver/copper mokume. Your patterned sheet can be used later to create pendants, earrings, box lids, etc.  Handmade chisels especially designed for mokume gane are included in all the kits. This online class is designed to work just like an in-person workshop, with demos, interactive presentations, and time to practice skills. We’ll be teaching via Zoom and you’re encouraged to work and ask questions along the way. We’ll finish each day with a group wrap up session. On the last day we’ll have our traditional raffle too! Chisel Patterning Mokume Gane - in person 2 or 3 day
Taught at Metalwerx Boston September 2025. Taught at Danaca Design, March 2025

Mokume Gane is an ancient Japanese technique that uses fused layers of different metals to form unique patterns. After a short overview of what mokume gane is and how it is made, we’ll delve into chiseling, using pre-fused mokume gane billets. Students will secure their work in pitch or use lower cost alternatives, and then learn to properly sharpen and accurately use their chisels. After chiseling, the billet will be forged back to flat, locking the pattern into the material. Patterns can be abstract or representational and informed by the student's own aesthetic; the design possibilities are endless. In 3 day classes, there is enough time for students to make their own chisel and/or focus on turning their patterned mokume into simple finished jewelry. This workshop is a great follow on for those who have taken previous mokume gane classes, but it is also open to those new to mokume gane. Participants can expect to create multiple patterned samples and/or finished jewelry depending on their interests and experience level. Detailed handouts including step-by-steps and equipment sources will be provided. Experience annealing and soldering silver is recommended.

Fabricating & Patinating Mokume Gane - in person 3-day
Taught at Danaca Design, March 2025

Working with mokume gane can be intimidating for even advanced metalsmiths. Can it be soldered? Forged? Sanded? What kind of patina should be used? Is etching always possible, or does it depend on the metals involved? All these questions and more will be answered here, as participants use pre-patterned mokume to create individual finished projects. Bring your own patterned mokume from previous classes or buy some authentic Phillip Baldwin mokume in class (courtesy of Layne Goldsmith/Danaca Design). Detailed demos will show recommended soldering, forming, finishing, and patina techniques for mokume gane of all types, from base metal to precious metal. Depending on skill level and interest, participants can create a box, sake cup, pendant, or work of their own design. The last day will include a thorough demonstration and chance to try the rare Japanese rokusho patina. There will be comprehensive handouts on everything covered.
This class is perfect for those Seattle Metals Guild folks wanting to create a piece with their own Phillip Baldwin mokume to be included in the "From Wave to Shining Wave" tribute exhibition, but it is also open to all intermediate/advanced metalsmiths (experience soldering recommended).

Go Big: Larger Scale Mokume-Gane Chisel-Patterning - In-person
3 Day workshop, usually taught 1x a year at Anneville or ??
Ever wanted to pattern mokume on a larger scale? Taken one chisel-patterning class, and want to get more in depth with chisels? This class is for you! Rather than smaller samples suitable mostly for jewelry, here we'll focus on chisel-patterning an entire billet at once and ending with material at least 18 gauge (1mm) thick, creating either a 5-6" square or equivalent rectangle, depending on your goal of either raising or fabricating a vessel or box. This material would also be great for chunky cuff bracelets! This class pairs well with the billet-making class scheduled right before, or you can buy your billet from me in ready-to-pattern state for an added kit fee (copper/brass billet), or bring your own billet from home (ask about dimensions/thickness). Lots of tips and tricks on how to work large with mokume will be discussed - forming, soldering, finishing, patinas, etc., but the goal here is to pattern the mokume.  You'll leave with material ready to raise and/or fabricate. Chisel-making will also be demonstrated, with the option to make your own as time allows.

The Art of Mokume Gane - In-person
Fall 2024 at Dallas Craft Guild,  summer 2022 at Mendocino, CA, Fall 2021 at Diane Weimer's studio in Long Beach, summer 2019 at Idyllwild.

Copper and Japanese Patinas Workshop
One day, in-person format

The final step in finishing a mokume gane piece is to apply a patina to highlight the colors of the different metals. This can be a tricky business, and is often done in a rush at the end of a class. But not here! Spend a full day exploring the different ways to patinate copper and copper alloys - we go way beyond liver of sulfur. We'll cover the mysteries of getting copper red, how to tease out the most contrast between your copper and brass, and of course all about rokusho (yes, there will be grated daikon). Intermediate/advanced students, bring your ready-to-patinate work to this class. It doesn't have to be mokume, but should have some mixed metals, hopefully copper and silver (shakudo and shibuichi would be great too). We'll also have sheets of plain copper available for those just wanting to learn and practice the techniques and color possibilities.

A Perfect Pair: Fusing & Chisel Patterning Mokume Gane - in person 5 day class
