An illustrated talk on an ancient Japanese metalsmithing technique

Mokume Gane: Metal That Grows Like Wood. An illustrated talk on an ancient Japanese metalsmithing technique with Farnham’s current Artist in Residence. Developed in Japan over 300 years ago, mokume gane (literally “wood-grain metal”) is a complex lamination and carving process that produces organic, flowing patterns in precious and non-precious metals. Anne Wolf, an internationally recognised jeweller based in California, has great experience in refining this technique, bridging traditional craft with contemporary jewellery practice. In this talk, Anne will share the history, process, and philosophy behind mokume gane, illustrated with examples from her studio and career.
