Combining twisting mokume with the use of metal burs can yield some great patterns. In this class I'll show two I've never shown before (3rd and 6th from left in the photo). Even if you've never patterned mokume before, you can follow the steps to create two uniquely patterned rods. Use the copper/brass mokume included in the basic kit, or spring for the deluxe kit and use my sterling/shibuichi rod, not available anywhere else.
Each pattern will be shown step-by-step, with visuals, videos, and my live narration. You'll have lots of time to try the techniques with me right there to answer your questions as they come up. This class focuses on creating the patterns rather than finished jewelry, but your samples can be used later to create earrings, pendants, rings, or even a bracelet. Suggestions will be shown in class.
For the more advanced/ambitious students, I'll be offering a deluxe kit with sterling silver/shibuichi mokume rod, which can be used to repeat either of the techniques. Only 10 deluxe kits will be available - order early to avoid disappointment!
For the best experience, this class is limited to 15 students. Prior experience with using a flexshaft, annealing, and forging is recommended.
Equipment/supplies needed: Torch, flexshaft, good vise-grip pliers, vise, forging or heavy planishing hammer (low-dome face), sturdy steel forging surface, files, handvise, rawhide or plastic mallet, liver of sulfur.
Basic Kit - sold separately: 1 4" copper/brass 4.5mm square mokume rod, 1 steel tire bur, sanding discs and mandrel, sandpaper and wax. $75
Deluxe Kit - sold separately: Includes all above, plus a 3” sterling silver/shibuichi 4mm rod (my exclusive mokume, not available anywhere else), and a sample size of Baldwin’s patina. $175.
Wondering if the deluxe kit is right for you? Mokume with silver in it can be ruined if overheated. If you can confidently anneal and solder silver without overheating it, you should be fine to order the deluxe kit.
Important: Be sure to order your kit by September 7, 2024 (US) to receive it in time.
