Due to the recently announced travel restrictions, we are sad to announce the cancellation of our class with Daniela Malev. At this time we can't know if flights will be available again in time for her trip so we're erring on the side of less stress for Daniela and all of you, our students. As with Albion, we're happily looking forward to rescheduling Daniela's class once things have calmed down and we'll announce the new dates in upcoming newsletters. In the meantime we'll be refunding all tuition payments today. #KeepCalmAndCarryOn #FlattenTheCurve

Pin mechanisms and brooch back design
Visiting Artist Workshop
with Master German Metalsmith Daniela Malev

April 20-22, 2020
3-day Intensive Mon through Wed 10am-5pm

Instructor: Daniela Malev. Tuition $420 + $10 materials fee payable in class.
In the field of contemporary jewelry the brooch is a beloved classic. One of the challenges of making a good brooch is to find an artful solution for the pin which connects the piece securely to the wearer. Far from being merely a functional, invisible part of the backside, the pin should contribute to the aesthetic value of the piece and it deserves to be developed with equal importance. This workshop guides you through a conscious approach to the design of the brooch back and pin. You will be introduced to a variety of pin mechanisms and guided through exercises covering various needle techniques and ways of thinking about what a needle can be. We will then delve into realizing them technically. You will learn how to integrate the brooch back and the pin mechanism into the whole creative process, thereby enhancing the aesthetic value and design impact of the piece. The overall goal of this workshop is to teach you technical skills that are rooted in a new way of thinking: a holistic approach to the brooch. Check back in the future for new dates.
