With so much uncertainty in the world right now, we want to let our beloved community of makers, students and teachers know that we're working hard to stay in business. We have been investigating business relief loans and doing some creative planning for what's next. Since we self-funded the Lab from our savings, we are very lucky to have no debt and since we hadn't gotten our act together to hire anyone we have no employees. Win-win! Most of the emergency loans on offer are designed to alleviate debt and payroll obligations. Considering the massive need to save jobs, we are trying to avoid accessing those programs unless we absolutely have to to make rent. Instead, to stay afloat we accepted a temporary rent deferral and we both immediately pivoted to our other businesses working on rings and websites. Now, as our COVID adventure enters a new month, we're itching to get back to the Lab! So here are the ideas we're rolling out and the ones we're thinking about ... and we could use your feedback on both so read on for our tiny questionnaire.

We're holding our last class meetings of the winter semester online instead of at the Lab. We've got some cool ideas to make it all seem less dreary and depressing so we hope you'll join us! Just go to our home page at your regular class time and you'll find a link to join in. Our last class each session is usually a party, so make yourself something yummy and fire up your computer, laptop, phone...whatevs. And if you're not a student of that class, join us online anyways! We're even going to hold our traditional, last class drawing for any of the students who tune in.
Due to the recently announced travel restrictions, we are sad to announce the cancellation of our class with Daniela Malev. At this time we can't know if flights will be available again in time for her trip so we're erring on the side of less stress for Daniela and all of you, our students. As with Albion, we're happily looking forward to rescheduling Daniela's class once things have calmed down and we'll announce the new dates in upcoming newsletters. In the meantime we'll be refunding all tuition payments today. #KeepCalmAndCarryOn #FlattenTheCurve Based on the recent news and guidelines, we've decided to do our part to #FlattenTheCurve by cancelling both of our upcoming classes with Albion Smith. We all agreed that having him travel to San Diego from Santa Cruz right now was not a good idea. We're happily looking forward to rescheduling those classes once things have calmed down and we'll announce the new dates in upcoming newsletters. Keep calm and carry on. It's hard to believe, but we opened the doors of our jewelry metals co-work space and open lab a whole year ago! In that time we've cultivated a family of 120 active students and 5 instructors - all of whom bring their own wonderful ideas, questions and expertise to every class. Over the past 10 months we've hosted 25 classes, 3 visiting artist workshops and logged dozens of open lab hours. Our mailing list has steadily grown to over 600 contacts and we have tons of interesting photos, videos and tips & tricks to post our Instagram and Facebook feeds. There's so much going on it's hard to find the time to parse through it all! To celebrate we're throwing a joyful party in the style of Dia de Los Muertos with special music and refreshments, free door prizes for the first 30 visitors, and a free raffle with some really great prizes. The evening's highlight will be a special awards ceremony at 7pm. Really we're filled with gratitude for all of the amazing support we've gotten from our students, colleagues, friends and family. First Friday is Liberty Station's monthly open studio event so in addition to visiting us you can experience a projection-mapped labyrinth right outside our building, explore the Liberty Public Market, visit nearby shops and studios and catch live entertainment - all with easy parking. It's one of San Diego's premiere, free, family-friendly arts events. Bring a friend or make one here, either way we hope you'll help us celebrate our first year! Get details and directions. We are thrilled to announce that lapidary artist Jeff Fulkerson be teaching Boho Bling Earrings next month. Jeff is an award-winning artist and contributor to Jewelry Artist Magazine and has taught at the Museum of Man, Granite Hills High School, Bead Fest, Oskadusa and many other venues. When he's not busy creating gorgeous jewelry and teaching he's working on a series of instructional books and videos - he's amazing! He has studied with many great Native American artists including Richard Tsosie (Navajo), Jesse Monogya (Hopi/Navajo) and Michael Cheatham (Cherokee). Read Jeff's full bio. We're pretty darned excited to be sending off our very first official advertising buy! It's with Metalsmith Magazine and will be appearing in an upcoming edition. The top left photo was taken at Anneville Jewelry Lab back in March and features talented young metalsmith Lincoln Hatfield learning uchidashi from Ford Hallam. The second photo shows Anne marveling at student Yoko Rover's uchidashi gourd during Ford Hallam's class. From there we showcased the work of three of our instructors. The first image is of Anne's 18k gold "Butterfly" mokume gane ring which was a special commission for Hiroko Sato-Pijanowski. Next is Bette Barnett's stunning "Discovery" ring featuring her signature steel & gold work with a gorgeous boulder opal. The next piece is a copper/brass/sterling silver mokume gane box by Anne Wolf and the last photo is Ford Hallam's exquisite tiger tsuba with its minute gold and shakudo inlays. As Anne was preparing for SNAG (the Society of North American Goldsmiths annual conference), I finally had a chance to go through my photos and put together our first brochure. The primary job of any brochure is to clearly communicate one's offerings and carry the brand message, so that was my main goal. Conceptually, I really wanted to highlight the community that we're working to create here at the Jewelry Lab. To that end, I was thrilled with some of the photos I've been getting with our new Canon 80D and put them to good use (although several images are just iPhone 6 shots - can you tell which are which?). A third imperative was to make our brochure more than simply a marketing tool. We knew wanted to make it something fun and useful so people would want to put it right up on their studio wall, and I think we succeeded. We are really thrilled to be hosting Alexandra "Alix" Hart for an class in July and our students are already very excited. Using and promoting responsibly sourced and recycled precious materials, fine art jewelry designer-goldsmith and sculptor Alexandra Hart creates one of a kind and limited edition couture art-jewelry. With both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Art and Metalsmithing, with fashion and production experience designing for Karl Lagerfeld and Givenchy fashion jewelry, and fine jewelry design and manufacturing for Barbara Heinrich Studio, she has expertise in the avant-garde, fashion design and high-end goldsmithing. It is my greatest desire to create work that adds value and contributes positively to the world. My designs celebrate the power and beauty of nature." Alix will be teaching Hollow form and Anti-Clastic Raising at Anneville Jewelry Lab July 10-Aug 14, 2019 in a 6 week series on Wednesdays from 6-9pm. Learn the basic concepts and techniques perfected by Georg Jensen and later Hekki Seppa of hollow forming and anti-clastic hammering to create two finished jewelry projects: a pendant and bracelet. Get to know and control the movement of the metal using the most fundamental and direct techniques of a few hammers and forms. Beginners can learn every step in the process- soldering is not required, and intermediate and advanced can expand the projects to their own levels. Register. See more of her work at AlexandraHart.com. Sunday, May 12, 2019 10:30am-4pm Celebrate all the moms by giving the gift of life! Ame here, Lab Coordinator. As many of you know, my mom passed into the great beyond a few years ago so I can't take her out for a swanky Mother's Day brunch. But instead of having a sad day missing her, I'm donating blood in her honor. Did you know that one donation can save several lives? The process is almost completely painless (2 tiny micro-second needle sticks), the people are super friendly, it's really fast and they always have great snacks. Come donate with us on Sunday and you'll get the satisfaction of knowing that you're fulfilling a life-saving, urgent need in our community. Walk-ins are welcome or, for optimum speediness, you can reserve a spot by calling 1-800-469-7322 or you can make an online appointment. We're not a gang, we're a Club! Anneville Jewelry Club is a free, informal group of metalsmiths and makers. No dues, no meetings, no malarky, we just get together to learn, work, make friends and have fun.
Anneville Jewelry Lab offers low cost hourly bench rentals in our Open Lab throughout the week. We’re located in sunny San Diego’s Liberty Station with abundant free parking, artisan coffee and a wide array of food options. See what the Club is up to lately on Instagram @annevillejewelrylab. Interested in joining? Just sign up at Anneville Jewelry Lab (yes, it's a real bulletin board and you sign up on paper with a pen).
