Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by to sip sangria, nibble on pan de muertos and Anne's fresh chile lime fruit and help us celebrate our first anniversary. We really appreciated the help of our fabulous volunteers Karen Rood, Yoko Rover, and Jean Franceschiello. We especially enjoyed the company of dear friends & students Guadelupe & Ray and Marie & Pat, both of whom stayed and visited, which was a real joy. The free 8pm raffle was quite a hit with Anne (student) winning Jeff Fulkerson's rhodocrosite cabochon, an adorable dad & daughter duo winning (with absolute delight) Julie's Monroe's enamel calavera pendant, Marie (of Marie & Pat!) winning Anne's calavera brooch and our own Carol Miles winning the grand prize of a free one month Gold membership to the lab ($150 value!). Continue on for photos.

It's hard to believe, but we opened the doors of our jewelry metals co-work space and open lab a whole year ago! In that time we've cultivated a family of 120 active students and 5 instructors - all of whom bring their own wonderful ideas, questions and expertise to every class. Over the past 10 months we've hosted 25 classes, 3 visiting artist workshops and logged dozens of open lab hours. Our mailing list has steadily grown to over 600 contacts and we have tons of interesting photos, videos and tips & tricks to post our Instagram and Facebook feeds. There's so much going on it's hard to find the time to parse through it all! To celebrate we're throwing a joyful party in the style of Dia de Los Muertos with special music and refreshments, free door prizes for the first 30 visitors, and a free raffle with some really great prizes. The evening's highlight will be a special awards ceremony at 7pm. Really we're filled with gratitude for all of the amazing support we've gotten from our students, colleagues, friends and family. First Friday is Liberty Station's monthly open studio event so in addition to visiting us you can experience a projection-mapped labyrinth right outside our building, explore the Liberty Public Market, visit nearby shops and studios and catch live entertainment - all with easy parking. It's one of San Diego's premiere, free, family-friendly arts events. Bring a friend or make one here, either way we hope you'll help us celebrate our first year! Get details and directions. Roughly 40 brave souls accepted the challenge to open EVERY drawer of the Toolbox of Terror at our October First Friday open studio. Not everyone who tried waw able to finish, but those who showed fortitude were richly rewarded. As each victim, er I mean guest, entered they were greeted by Ame or impromptu volunteer Jean and asked if they were ready to ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE. If they answered yes we led them over to the TOOLBOX OF TERROR and wished them good luck. We then retired across the room to listen to their screams (and a good amount of laughter at our cheesy display). Successful adventurers were rewarded with the choice of asking our extremely vintage Magic 8 Ball a question or consulting our Crystal Ball. Every visitor left with a goody from our treat basket - either candy or stickers. Continue on for photos and ... if you're brave enough ... view the TOOLBOX OF TERROR ITSELF! We've pried open the crypt and invited a host of horrors out to play for First Friday on October 4th! Stop by between 5-9 pm for all sorts of spooky delights including a reanimated BOGO special. Don't miss the famous interactive Toolbox of Terror ... Bwah Ha Ha! First Friday (formerly known as Friday Night Liberty) is Liberty Station's monthly open studio event so in addition to visiting us you can explore the Liberty Public Market, visit nearby shops and studios and catch live entertainment - all with easy parking. Whether you bring a friend or make one here, it's one of San Diego's premiere, free, family-friendly arts events. Get details and directions. Saturday was a gorgeous day at Liberty Station and thanks to the hard work of the folks at the San Diego Blood Bank we saw 18 donors and collected 18 pints of blood, saving 54 lives in our community. Eight of the participants were first time donors, which is fantastic! I gave blood at noon and was delighted to discover that they were showing Godzilla King of the Monsters! I literally didn't even notice when the nurse started the blood draw because I was watching Mothra. So much fun! AND, everyone who donated got a voucher for a free pint of Baskin Robbins ice cream. The best thing of all is that I had set a modest goal of collecting 30 donations in our first year of hosting the Bloodmobile. I am very happy to announce that we blew past that goal with 41 donations! Next Blood Drive is tentatively scheduled for March 2020. Hundreds of visitors attended the live concert, open artist studios, gallery viewings, food and wine at September's First Friday. This was an "Amplified" month, which brought another opportunity for our students to offer their pieces at the Local Bazaar outdoor sale. Beth Peckham, Thida Key and Yoko Rover really pulled out the stops to finish some great work and create beautiful table displays. Meanwhile up in the Lab, Jeff Fulkerson offered some of his beautiful jewelry along with colorful cabochons and Anne demo'd mokume gane raising. We had some great visitors too including past ring clients and current students Cecilia & Gina, Pat & Marie and Yvonne - who arrived with little Zinnia, Sophia and Christof too! Thank you SO MUCH to our dedicated students who staffed the table representing the Lab, to Jeff for being on hand to explain his upcoming class offerings and to everyone who stopped by the say hello. We’re short a few pints … Let’s trade! Get a voucher for a FREE pint of your favorite Baskin Robbins ice cream when you donate blood. Through our Liberty Station Blood Drives we've helped the San Diego Blood Bank collect 23 blood donations so far this year. That's 23 people who have received the life-saving gift of blood. Join Ame in donating (she's working toward her 4 Gallon badge) or help us get the word out to your friends and family so we can hit our goal of 30 donations for 2019. You never know who's life you'll save! All you need to do is eat a good meal, hydrate, bring a picture ID and pop in to the Bloodmobile outside the Lab (on Historic Decatur Road by the Liberty Public Market), complete your donation, enjoy cookies and juice and you're done! While walk-ins are welcome, but it's a big help to let us know you're coming to arrange for snacks - and FREE ICE CREAM VOUCHERS! (Did we mention, you get FREE ice cream? Seriously!). Schedule your appointment.

Steel & Gold Workshop
Visiting Artist Workshop - Bette Barnett 3-day intensive, Fri-Sat & Sun August 23-25, 2019 - 9am-4pm Instructor: Bette Barnett. Tuition $440 plus $50 materials fee payable in class. Steel is an amazing metal – strong, light weight and malleable. One of the most fascinating characteristics of steel is its affinity for gold. Simply put, steel “loves” gold and marrying the two results in dramatic mixed metals jewelry that responds to today’s aesthetic for work that ranges from bold and rich to gritty and rustic. In this three-day workshop, you will learn how to create dramatic steel and gold jewelry. We’ll cover how to work with mild (cold rolled) steel and explore techniques required to create jewelry from steel, including sourcing, cutting, forming, texturing, patinating and finishing. During the workshop you will learn how to alloy and roll our own gold, torch-fuse gold to steel and apply gold to steel using the Keum Boo technique. At the completion of the workshop, you’ll have at least one finished piece and other in-progress work that you can complete in your own studio. You’ll also come away with the skills you need to create dramatic, eye-catching steel and gold jewelry. Students must also bring 2 pennyweights of 24k gold casting grain (available from Rio Grande), more details sent after registration. Register. We are thrilled to announce that lapidary artist Jeff Fulkerson be teaching Boho Bling Earrings next month. Jeff is an award-winning artist and contributor to Jewelry Artist Magazine and has taught at the Museum of Man, Granite Hills High School, Bead Fest, Oskadusa and many other venues. When he's not busy creating gorgeous jewelry and teaching he's working on a series of instructional books and videos - he's amazing! He has studied with many great Native American artists including Richard Tsosie (Navajo), Jesse Monogya (Hopi/Navajo) and Michael Cheatham (Cherokee). Read Jeff's full bio. Stop by Anneville Jewelry Lab on the First Friday in August (8/2/19) to browse beautiful cabochons and explore the world of semi-precious gemstones with master lapidarist Michael Hendrix of Minarex. Michael cuts each stone by hand in his San Diego County studio. Each creation is unique, like a miniature painting full of nature's colors and textures, ready to be part of a unique jewelry creation. Not a jeweler? No worries - our jewelers will be on hand to discuss a custom commission to set your newfound gem. Or even better, you can take one of our upcoming classes and learn to set it yourself! Then head over to Anneville Studio to meet steel and gold artist Bette Barnett! She'll will have an array of work on display and be discussing her fascinating Keum Boo technique and more. First Friday is a fun, family-friendly event that happens every month. Come explore the fabulous new Liberty Public Market, stroll through shops and visit working artist studios to see what's new - all for FREE. Anneville is just one of over 80 artist studios, galleries, museums and other art destinations open for this monthly event. With a dozen fabulous restaurants within walking distance, it makes a great evening out. And, we've got free parking! Hope to see you soon. More info about Friday Night Liberty can be found at NTC at Liberty Station. Get directions. We're pretty darned excited to be sending off our very first official advertising buy! It's with Metalsmith Magazine and will be appearing in an upcoming edition. The top left photo was taken at Anneville Jewelry Lab back in March and features talented young metalsmith Lincoln Hatfield learning uchidashi from Ford Hallam. The second photo shows Anne marveling at student Yoko Rover's uchidashi gourd during Ford Hallam's class. From there we showcased the work of three of our instructors. The first image is of Anne's 18k gold "Butterfly" mokume gane ring which was a special commission for Hiroko Sato-Pijanowski. Next is Bette Barnett's stunning "Discovery" ring featuring her signature steel & gold work with a gorgeous boulder opal. The next piece is a copper/brass/sterling silver mokume gane box by Anne Wolf and the last photo is Ford Hallam's exquisite tiger tsuba with its minute gold and shakudo inlays. Anneville Jewelry Lab Raises $520 for Jewish Family Service's Downtown Family Migrant Shelter7/8/2019 We are thrilled to announce that thanks to the hard work and generous contributions of our makers (Karen R., Karen F., Susan, Abby), shopper/donors (Alix S., Geraldine, Jaime, Jeremiah, Andrew, Peter, Jeremy, Luz, Rosalva, Helen, Gabrielle, Amber, Michelle, Nichole, Cecilia, Karen, Beth, Jean, Anne T., Carol, Ame and more), neighbors (Ron and Gary), teachers (Anne, Julie and Alix) and others, we have now raised $520 for Jewish Family Services to support the Downtown Migrant Shelter. At the San Diego County Fair this year, talented Anneville students and teachers took home multiple 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons in several categories … including acrylic painting! The work period up to the fair was full of focused energy, the pre-fair sunset cocktails event was wonderful (thanks Cindy!) and the Exhibitor Night Party was great fun. Every time we came around a corner … BOOM another ribbon! And we had a great time listening to fairgoers view the work too “Oh, this one is so creative.” and “Wow, look at the detail on that!”. Two of our students were even contacted to sell their entries. Maker's Rummage Sale & Raffle pairs with Hollow Form Demos to wow visitors at July's First Friday7/8/2019
Our July #FirstFriday #ShopAndSwap#OpenStudio was a big success! We had about 75 visitors come through to enjoy browsing our Maker's Rummage Sale (which extended out into the hallway), watching @alexandrahartmfa doing her fascinating #anticlasticraising demos and @paparon1943 demonstrating his #FrenchMarquetry work. We also had Abby selling her beautiful #cabochons, Susan with cabochons and lots more, and generous donations of goodies by Karen F. and Karen R. So far weâve raised almost $300 for #JewishFamilyServices in support of the Downtown Migrant Shelter - and weâre not done yet! (More on that in the next post). Super-duper big thanks to the wonderful Joanne & Herb Hein @joannehein and @growinggreeninteractions for their fabulous set up, cashiering and MC Services! We had a wonderful turnout for our first Anneville Jewelry Lab Student Sale on Friday, June 7th. We were blessed with good weather and (thanks to Anne's swift action) a great location on a patio right near the Jewelry Lab. Our student artists created appealing displays of their own items and then worked together to quickly create an inviting, u-shaped exhibit that well represented the Lab as an organization. We were a bit concerned by the late-breaking detail that we'd have no electricity (gah!) but we gathered up our camping lights and bravely continued. Meanwhile, up in the Lab, Anne did some mokume gane patterning demos and we had a great time seeing old friends and meeting new ones. We were thrilled by a visit from our new instructor, Alexandra Hart as well as our dear friend Helen Shirk (each accompanied by their handsome beaus). It was great to see students from the lab and different classes coming together to meet for the first time. I'm so impressed by how much work and thoughtfulness everyone put in to making this event a success. Be sure to view our fun photos. June 7th, 2019 • 5-9pm Pop Up Market • Live Concerts • Craft Beer Garden Our students are busily working on their Spring jewelry collections and we're super excited to be hosting our first Jewelry Lab Student Sale! Come meet our student makers and browse their beautiful, handmade jewelry & gifts in the outdoor bazaar. We'll also be open in the Lab where Anne Wolf will be doing live Japanese metalworking demos and you can even try your hand - just follow the sound of hammering upstairs in Barracks 15. Totally free and fun for the whole family. Live demos at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. Get directions. Pendant by Alyssa Ihle, pendant by Cindy McQuade, Mokume gane rings by Karen Rood and Karen working on a square wire bracelet in The Lab. Click any image for a larger view.
As Anne was preparing for SNAG (the Society of North American Goldsmiths annual conference), I finally had a chance to go through my photos and put together our first brochure. The primary job of any brochure is to clearly communicate one's offerings and carry the brand message, so that was my main goal. Conceptually, I really wanted to highlight the community that we're working to create here at the Jewelry Lab. To that end, I was thrilled with some of the photos I've been getting with our new Canon 80D and put them to good use (although several images are just iPhone 6 shots - can you tell which are which?). A third imperative was to make our brochure more than simply a marketing tool. We knew wanted to make it something fun and useful so people would want to put it right up on their studio wall, and I think we succeeded. We are really thrilled to be hosting Alexandra "Alix" Hart for an class in July and our students are already very excited. Using and promoting responsibly sourced and recycled precious materials, fine art jewelry designer-goldsmith and sculptor Alexandra Hart creates one of a kind and limited edition couture art-jewelry. With both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Art and Metalsmithing, with fashion and production experience designing for Karl Lagerfeld and Givenchy fashion jewelry, and fine jewelry design and manufacturing for Barbara Heinrich Studio, she has expertise in the avant-garde, fashion design and high-end goldsmithing. It is my greatest desire to create work that adds value and contributes positively to the world. My designs celebrate the power and beauty of nature." Alix will be teaching Hollow form and Anti-Clastic Raising at Anneville Jewelry Lab July 10-Aug 14, 2019 in a 6 week series on Wednesdays from 6-9pm. Learn the basic concepts and techniques perfected by Georg Jensen and later Hekki Seppa of hollow forming and anti-clastic hammering to create two finished jewelry projects: a pendant and bracelet. Get to know and control the movement of the metal using the most fundamental and direct techniques of a few hammers and forms. Beginners can learn every step in the process- soldering is not required, and intermediate and advanced can expand the projects to their own levels. Register. See more of her work at AlexandraHart.com. Last month I took a deep breath and ordered the precious metal to create this tiny billet. It is made from 18k yellow gold and palladium 500. This was my first time fusing a gold billet that did not contain silver layers. Not having the silver layers was notable for two reasons - first the cost. This billet, although it was tinier than usual ring billets (12.5mm x 25mm x 17m), the materials were almost twice the price. Second, fusing is tricky - each metal type requires a different temperature. If it isn't just exactly right for the types of metals being joined, the layers can delaminate. When the materials are expensive, this becomes even more something you really want to avoid! But, I'd really been wanting to try this combination, and I had a customer ready to buy if it was successful. I did all the steps as carefully as I could, from the cleaning to the stacking to the pressing. Everything worked out great, no issues at all, and I love the colors! Rings shown are the first two created with this billet - I've got enough material for two more ...
When Leslie at the San Diego Blood Bank contacted us to see if we could host the Blood Mobile on short notice I didn't hesitate to say yes spring into action - especially since it was for a Mother's Day! Within a few days we had flyers up around Liberty Station and posts out on our social media. The day dawned sunny and warm and we had our first donors before the doors were even open. By the end of the day, the fast and friendly Blood Mobile crew had processed 14 donors (5 more than last time) and our second blood drive this year was an even bigger success than the first one. Our own Lab Coordinator Ame Stanko was one of them and she's now a member of the 3 Gallon Club! Here's the sweet note we got from the Blood Bank afterwards: "Thank you Ame so much for hosting last minute. We had a great day because of your efforts! We collected 14 pints saving 42 lives in our community. You made all the difference.Again thank you for your partnership, we wouldn’t be able to provide for our hospitals and patients without it." ~ Leslie Eagan, San Diego Blood Bank Thanks to everyone who let us put up flyers and helped us spread the word and thanks especially to all of our wonderful donors and for the life-saving work the San Diego Blood Bank does for all of us every day.
Sunday, May 12, 2019 10:30am-4pm Celebrate all the moms by giving the gift of life! Ame here, Lab Coordinator. As many of you know, my mom passed into the great beyond a few years ago so I can't take her out for a swanky Mother's Day brunch. But instead of having a sad day missing her, I'm donating blood in her honor. Did you know that one donation can save several lives? The process is almost completely painless (2 tiny micro-second needle sticks), the people are super friendly, it's really fast and they always have great snacks. Come donate with us on Sunday and you'll get the satisfaction of knowing that you're fulfilling a life-saving, urgent need in our community. Walk-ins are welcome or, for optimum speediness, you can reserve a spot by calling 1-800-469-7322 or you can make an online appointment. Over 50 people followed the sound of ringing hammers to see our demos at our monthly open studio event last Friday. Anneville Jewelry Lab member Janet Herman taught her sold-out class how to use the20-ton hydraulic press and they created a collection of bees, flowers and other items that will be used in jewelry projects. Meanwhile Anne showed visitors the Japanese metalworking technique of Uchidashi and several people gave it a go themselves with our demo pitch bowl. In our raffle we gave away one of our new Anneville fridge magnets, a gift certificate for goodies from our General Store and TWO necklaces featuring freshly-pressed bees. Photos coming soon!
