While everyone around us is canceling events, we feel it is important to stay connected in the ways that we can. In a spirit of adventure and as part of our effort to lessen the impact of COVID-19, we held the last meeting of this semester's Independent Study class online (instead of at the Lab) as an interactive live stream. Anne shared her recent patina adventure with master metalsmith David Huang and took us step-by-step through a demonstration using easy patinas to try at home - some with chemicals you probably already have. And just like a usual class, participants asked jewelry/metals questions - only this time it was by logging in to Anne's Facebook page and commenting. Both Anne and our regular Independent Study instructor Julie were on hand to answer the great questions that came in. We have a lot of work to do on the quality and our set up but were excitedly working on those issues and our goal is deliver top-quality presentations for you, our beloved students. Andra Tutto Bene! In the meantime, watch our first live stream.

Due to the recently announced travel restrictions, we are sad to announce the cancellation of our class with Daniela Malev. At this time we can't know if flights will be available again in time for her trip so we're erring on the side of less stress for Daniela and all of you, our students. As with Albion, we're happily looking forward to rescheduling Daniela's class once things have calmed down and we'll announce the new dates in upcoming newsletters. In the meantime we'll be refunding all tuition payments today. #KeepCalmAndCarryOn #FlattenTheCurve It looks like COVID19 is going to be a part of our lives for awhile so we've decided to take inspiration from what strong women have done for generations...meet the challenge head on.
Like other cities, San Diego has declared a state of emergency, which is a governmental action that prioritizes the COVID response. This is great news and as you look around you'll see a lot of people working hard to address the situation - and you can help. Is there an elderly friend you can call or send a supportive email to? Is there a harried mom or dad dealing with kids home from school that you can do a grocery run for? We can all get creative and think of ways to help each other while staying safe and being creative is, after all, what we do best. Our message today is one of strength and unity - it's a good time to keep calm and carry on. P.S. And here's a bit of advice from Dame Maggie for us all ...
Based on the recent news and guidelines, we've decided to do our part to #FlattenTheCurve by cancelling both of our upcoming classes with Albion Smith. We all agreed that having him travel to San Diego from Santa Cruz right now was not a good idea. We're happily looking forward to rescheduling those classes once things have calmed down and we'll announce the new dates in upcoming newsletters. Keep calm and carry on. Something kind of amazing happened at our First Friday open studio. Amidst all of the scary Covid19 news, we had a great turnout with 30-40 people stopping by, excited to see what all the hammering was about. All of the "flupocalypse" worries faded away as students warmly greeted each other and we all watched Alix’s mesmerizing hammering. The Lab is often a place where the concerns of the outside world seem to just take a pause. Maybe it was the quiet competence of Alix’s metal work, or the conviviality of the sangria and cookies, I don’t know but many people who came in just plunked down their things and sat awhile, enjoying themselves. 4 hours flew by and I was sad to see it end. To Alix and all of our great students and friends who stopped by - thank you! And to my mailing list signs ups - I’ll get those new classes posted asap. Mark your calendar for next First Friday - April 3rd. Click any image for a larger view.
Friday, March 6, 5-9pm 2020 Stop by on Friday to watch a master metalsmith at work performing hollow forming and anticlastic hammering in the style of master metalsmiths Georg Jensen and Hekki Seppa. In this exciting night of demos you can see how Alexandra controls the movement of the metal using just a few hammers and stakes. Demos at the top of the hour - 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. First Friday is a fun, family-friendly event that happens every month. Come explore the fabulous new Liberty Public Market, stroll through shops and visit working artist studios to see what's new - all for FREE. Anneville is just one of over 80 artist studios, galleries, museums and other art destinations open for this monthly event. With a dozen fabulous restaurants within walking distance, it makes a great evening out. And, we've got free parking! Get directions. Join us at Liberty Station for our Trenton Blood Drive on Saturday, March 14, 2020. We'll be hosting the Blood Mobile from 11 am to 5 pm - parked right outside the Lab on Historic Decatur Road. Trenton was diagnosed with a rare, fast-growing stage IV brain cancer called Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT). He’s had surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and 15 blood and platelet transfusions as part of his treatment. Trenton’s last MRI was great, and doctors found that the tumor has not grown nor spread, but he still has a long battle ahead of him that will likely include additional platelet and blood transfusions. That's where you come in...if you can donate or help us spread the word to find more blood donors - it makes a huge difference. All you need to do to donate is drink plenty of fluids and bring a photo ID with you to the Blood Mobile on Saturday March 14th. Questions you can reach the San Diego Blood Bank at (619)400-8251. Appointments are not required but greatly appreciated. Make your appointment in a few clicks at sandiegobloodbank.org/donate. Can't donate but want to help us spread the word? Please share our flyer at work, school or online. Download the flyer, thank you and Go Team Trenton! Our All Craft Tool Sale on January 17th was a spectacular success. Before we could even get everything out of the boxes we had excited shoppers arriving. The tables in the lab groaned under the weight of bezel blocks, exotic hammers in all shapes and sizes, professional ring sizing sets, shaping blocks, mandrels, precision compasses, wax carving tools, burr sets, shaping blocks and tons more. Meanwhile over in Anne's Studio, buyers chatted happily as they poured over whisper-thin micro files, chasing hammers and boxes upon boxes of pliers in every size and shape imaginable. In addition to the tools, Anne and Tevel circulated through each room consulting on tool uses and throwing out jewelry making tips and tricks. Did I mention that the hallways were also packed with goodies from giant bracelet mandrels to patinas, saw blade sets and jewelry books? At 2:30 the fabulous Bette Barnett arrived to amaze us all with a free Keum Boo demo where she showed us how to use the exquisite gold and silver foil Tevel had on sale. Even though I helped set up, every time I turned around I saw something new out on a table. From all of the frantic shopping and sheepish grins as people left clutching their finds, it was clear that everyone really enjoyed it. Including us, at the end of it all we couldn't idly sit by and watch Tevel take everything back so we kept a few boxes on consignment. Stayed tuned for a Store update! And if you missed the fun, never fear, we're already working on when Tevel can return. We had so much fun at our First Friday Valentine's Party on February 7th! 💝At one point we had a full house of people excitedly looking at jewelry and classes! It was wonderful to see some dear friends and students and everyone enjoyed the free gift (sparkle-etch valentines) and the chocolate cookies. Even though we had a double-blind raffle with about 30 entries, all of the winners were students! Go fig! Special thanks goes out to Yvonne Dao of @yvonnedaojewels and Yoko Rover of Yoko Rover Jewelry @yokorover for volunteering and bringing the bling - your displays are now officially fantastic. Save the date - March 6th - for our next First Friday Open Studio when we’ll be hosting metalsmith extraordinaire Alexandra Hart showing us how anticlastic raising works. Join us - our First Friday open studio events are always free, no rsvp required.
In honor of the month of love we're running a sale on all of the jewelry in our gallery case. Anne pretty much never does sales, so this is a great opportunity to pick up some beautiful work at 20% off including mokume gane earrings, bracelets & pendants all hand-made right here at Liberty Station. Anne's also offering forged sterling silver etched "tree bark" rings and her one-of-a-kind "Sun Blaze" mokume gane pill box (save $76!). In addition to Anne's work we have handmade pieces by silversmith Julie Monroe including her unique water-cast San Diego sea glass pendants (imbued with warm sand, swaying palm trees and ocean breezes), enamel and fume-patina earrings and three spectacular stone-set cuff bracelets. Her "Ruby Dragonfly" bracelet in particular is a great gift and it's $49 off right now. Everything comes with free gift wrapping including a chocolate favor. Sale ends at 6pm on Thursday 2/13/20. Peace, Love and Mokume Gane!
Thanks so much to everyone who came out to help with our January Blood Drive. Here's the report from our coordinator Leslie at the San Diego Blood Bank: "WOW what an awesome drive on Saturday! With your advertising efforts, new Blood Mobile location and our volunteers we registered 30 donors and collected 28 pints, saving 84 lives in our community. There were 15 first time donors which is amazing. Thank you so much for all your support!" Our pint total last year was 41 and I had modestly hoped to double it this year but we're well on our way so I'm going to go ahead and make our goal an ambitious 100 pints. Help us spread the word, our next blood drive is March 14th, 2020!
Join us for a festive evening celebrating love of all stripes with music, snacks, a jewelry sale and a raffle featuring fun Valentine’s goodies. Free gift wrapping on all purchases and the first 15 visitors get a special Valentine surprise! Peace, Love and Mokume Gane ~ Ame & Anne

We're kicking off 2020 with our first blood drive on January 18th. The San Diego Blood Bank Blood Mobile will be parked outside the Lab on Historic Decatur Road near the Liberty Public Market from 11am-5pm. Did you know that you get points every time you donate? Yep, and you can redeem them for gift cards and other goodies. PLUS, this month we're offering a special free snacks and a $20 coupon good for classes and Open Lab time to all donors - just stop by the Lab after you donate and show us your cool arm band. That day at the Lab we're learning torch-fired enamels so you might see some glowing torches in action too! For your blood donation, be sure to bring a photo ID and make sure you're well hydrated. Walk-ins are welcome but it's best to make an appointment. I'll be the first donor at 11am so I hope to see you there! Make your appointment.
What a year! From an empty room and a lot of scribbling on a notepad in October of 2018, we created a fully-equipped metals lab that over the last year has hosted 30 classes taught by 6 different teachers. We've held 14 open studio events, fielded a team of makers to the San Diego County Fair (winning over a dozen ribbons), developed our student base to over 140 and hosted 3 student sales. We also organized a Shop & Swap tool & materials fundraiser collecting $520 for the Jewish Family Services’ Downtown Migrant Center and we sponsored 4 blood drives, collecting 41 donations. Behind those numbers is an intangible that was actually our biggest goal - a friendly, metal arts community. Through births, deaths, accidents, illnesses and politics we've come together to help each other and, in the process, we've learned that the Lab is a lot of things to a lot of people. We're deeply grateful and humbled by the amazing support we've gotten to make this all happen. So here's hoping that 2020 brings you strong saw blades, powerful pickle, and clean solder seams. Happy New Year and thanks for watching!

It’s December 20 – I haven’t mailed out my holiday cards, the tree isn’t decorated, and I haven’t baked one cookie. And you know, I’m all right with that. This past year has been a whirlwind, getting the Lab up and running. From an empty room and a lot of scribbling on a notepad, Ame and I created a fully-equipped metals lab that over the last year has hosted 30 classes taught by 6 different teachers. We held 14 open studio events, fielded a team of makers to the San Diego County Fair (winning over a dozen ribbons), developed our student base to over 140 and hosted 3 student sales. We also organized a Shop & Swap tool & materials fundraiser collecting $520 for the Jewish Family Services’ Downtown Migrant Center and we sponsored 4 blood drives, collecting 41 donations. For December's First Friday we hosted three artists in the Lab, Anne did mokume gane chisel demos in her studio AND we had two tables outside! Upstairs in the Lab, Yvonne of Yvonne Dao Jewels created a great display of her space-inspired work while Yoko of Yoko R Creations showed off her pieces (including her great whale shark bracelet) and artist & instructor Jessica Andersen offered her one-of-a-kind art jewelry and beautiful ornaments. Meanwhile, downstairs ... ... our hearty instructor Jules Monroe (along with her trusty studio dog Jazz) braved the cold alongside Seaglass Queen Valerie Safford to merrily greet people at our table in the outdoor bazaar. Jules showed off her fume patina earrings and new water-cast seaglass pendants while Val offered her glimmering designs featuring San Diego seaglass. Throughout the evening we had fun guests, making for a busy night with quite a few sales. We also had a bunch of VIP visitors including the fabulous Irene Wetsman of IJD Designs, our own Alix Hart, Val's mom (who was a hoot!) and Irene's fabulous husband and dog...along with many other friends, both old and new. By the time we toddled out, a big cauldron of hot spiced cider had been dispensed to happy minglers and we'd all heard enough holiday music to launch us merrily into the season. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make it a success and to all of our wonderful visitors ... happy holidays!
As of today, we have 4 emerging artists and two teachers confirmed for our Merry Maker's Market on Friday and we're waiting to hear back from several more. Click any image for a larger view. On December 6th you'll find our village stalls both inside and out festooned with bright holly, sparkling lights, fragrant pine boughs and a full complement of cheery makers proffering their sparkling silver, gold, brass and bejeweled wares. Take in the festively crisp night air (perhaps, I mean it is San Diego) of Liberty Station's outdoor European-style Christmas market where we'll have a stall or step lightly to the second floor of Barracks 15 to revel in medieval holiday charm as you browse our two small shops. Find the perfect holiday gift for that special baker, butcher or cobbler in your life or pick out a one-of-a-kind treasure for yourself.
